The Very Hungry Author: Eric Carle

Eric Carle is the author and illustrator of more than 70 books for very young children, including the most well known title: The Very Hungry Caterpillar!

Eric Carle was born in 1929 in Syracuse, New York but moved to Germany with his family. He returned to New York after graduating from the Akademie der bildenden Kunste and he began working as a graphic designer in the promotion department of the New York Times.

He later became an art director of an advertising agency for many years.

Eric Carle began his career in children’s literature after he collaborated with author and educator Bill Martin Jr. During this collaboration, Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What do you see? was born.

Soon Eric Carle began to write stories of his own, where his distinctive and colorful art style is instantly recognizable. One of his most popular books, as previously mentioned, is The Very Hungry Caterpillar, a colorful story of a caterpillar that can’t stop eating everything in sight!
