Lynne Cherry is an American children’s author. She was born January 1, 1952, in Philadelphia. She received her B.A. from Tyler School of Art, and her M.A. in History from Yale. Lynne is an active conservationist, using her books to educate readers about environmental issues. All of Lynne’s books focus on environmental issues, primarily conservation and respecting the earth. Lynne hopes that, by reading her books, kids will become interested in nature.

Lynne has written and illustrated over 30 awkward-winning children’s books. The Great Kapok Tree: A Tale of the Amazon Rainforest, is Lynne’s most widely-known book. It was first published in 1990.

Lynne said she wrote the book to show “the world what happens to the rainforest creatures…when rainforests are destroyed.” Lynne even traveled to the Brazilian rainforest for inspiration and insight.

Although Lynne writes both fiction and nonfiction books, her message is the same: respect and protect the earth. Whether you want to learn more about the Brazilian rainforest, the gardening cycle, or a thrush’s lifecycle, DeKalb Public Library has you covered!
