Are you ready to learn more about one of your favorite authors? Well, you’re in luck because this time on the Author Highlight, we’ll be talking about Corey R. Tabor!

Corey R. Tabor grew up in Gillette, Wyoming, where he once spent the night in a cave by an underground waterfall. (Doesn’t that sound like fun?) He now lives in Tacoma, Washington with his family and spends his time making pictures and stories.

He is the author and illustrator of many children’s books. You may recognize some of his stories because he wrote and illustrated Fox and the Bike Ride, Ursula Upside Down, Simon and the Better Bone, Mel Fell, Snail Crossing, and many, many others! Some of his books have won several awards including the Caldecott Honor for Mel Fell, the Geisel Award for Fox Has a Problem, Fox and Night, and the Sir Ladybug graphic novel series.

In addition to his own writing, he’s worked alongside authors like Andy Chou Musser and Ben Clanton for Papilio and with Eric Hoffman, where he illustrated A Dark, Dark Cave.

As an illustrator, Corey R. Tabor creates beautiful images that bring his stories to life. He is a big fan of picture books, and he’s been creating since he was a child. He says that the Calvin and Hobbes collections by Bill Watterson are some of his favorite illustrated books. He works in watercolor, ink, colored pencil, crayon, charcoal, digitally, and even with block printing ink!

Look at some of his process photos, isn’t that so cool?

“I painted everything in either green or red and then changed the colors digitally when I assembled it all in Photoshop. Looking back at it now, two years later, I have no idea why I did it this way, but I’m sure I must have had a (good?) reason at the time.”–Corey R. Tabor
