If you’re chasing chocolate, swooning over sweets, or just crushing on candy, then June is the month for you because June is National Candy Month!
Candy has been around for centuries, but it has changed quite a lot in that time! The ancient Egyptians used to preserve nuts and fruits with honey. In China, people made rock candy by boiling sugar and water until it crystalized.
One of the oldest candies sold in the U.S. was The Gibralter, a hard candy that came in lemon or peppermint flavors. These were made by Mrs. Mary Spencer, and were sold in Salem, Massachusetts. Later, she opened the nation’s very first candy shop on the first floor of her home called Ye Old Pepper Candy Company, this store is still open and selling sweets!

But why is National Candy Month celebrated in June? In 1974, the National Confectioners Association (NCA) created the holiday to help boost wintertime candy sales – but the timing was kind of a dud (and not a Milkdud). In 1999, National Candy Month was officially moved to June, because it’s the 6-month mark between two major holidays, and (more importantly) to make summer a little sweeter.
