For many people growing up and making models, there were no videos showing how to paint a model! Today there are plenty of artists who post their painting, design, and modelling processes on Youtube. This is a collection of useful, inspirational Youtube content creators who make videos on miniature painting, broken up by techniques for people curious about different approaches to adding color and detail to their models.

Putting paint on the model is a huge part of model making. Here are a collection of techniques and creators that show beginner friendly techniques and concepts to consider when approaching model painting. The 309 Makerspace is equipped with a great deal of different types of paint and paintbrushes, feel free to investigate during an Open Lab time or at one of our monthly painting programs. Attend one of our upcoming Miniature Painting programs (see below)  to try these and other techniques or stop by 309 Creative on your own time during one of our Open Lab sessions.

Goobertown Hobbies – Brent, a Chemistry PhD and painting enthusiast explains paint interactions and colors.

One particularly useful tutorial is a technique called Slapchop that uses spray paint and light transparent paints called “contrast paints” or “speed paints.” The results are quick and easy and detailed by numerous painting Youtubers.

See Goobertown Hobbies example here:

Duncan Rhodes – Expert painter of “Grimdark” style used in Warhammer, instructor of how to paint Warhammer models.

Ataraxia Painting – Italian painter focused on technique, how to accurately paint light.

Vince Venturella – Award-winning painter with a large collection of how-to videos, reviews.

These videos are just scratching the surface of what resources and tutorials are available. Find a creator or technique that speaks to you and dive in. Keep an eye out for future blogs detailing sculpting, kitbashing, and 3D Printing your own miniatures.
