August 9th is National Book Lovers’ Day!
You might say, “That sounds like a made-up holiday!”
Well, all holidays have to get their start somewhere. Did you think Groundhog’s Day always existed? And books probably matter a whole lot more to your life than a big rodent who may or may not see its shadow!
National Book Lovers Day may be new, but nobody knows where it came from.
All we know is that, every year on the same day, people who love books try to put away their technology and spend some time reading a good book.
What book will you read to celebrate National Book Lovers Day? If you’re looking for something new, try the Leven Thumps series. This was one of my favorites when I was younger.
Leven is a teen boy who sets out to travel to Foo, a magical dreamland. Along the way, he meets some friends, including Geth.
Geth is a prince who gets turned into a seed. Eventually, that seed becomes a tree. And that tree becomes a toothpick. A walking, talking toothpick. If you want to know what happens next, check it out here at DKPL!
Vocab Corner: If you want to impress your friends, try saying “bibliophile.” It means the same thing as “book lover.”
As an adult, I like to read Brandon Sanderson.
He is mostly known for his books for grown-ups. His most popular series are Mistborn and The Stormlight Archive. But he has published books for kids, too. One is called The Most Boring Book Ever. It isn’t actually boring at all. There’s even a dragon on the cover.
If you’re an older kid, you might want to check out Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians. It’s the start of a big fantasy series that now includes six books.
