Calm Room Now Open!

Jul 13, 2026 | News, Kids

Our Children’s Department is pleased to announce that the Calm Room is now open! Located next to the Youth Study Rooms, this space is designed to give children who feel overstimulated, anxious, or stressed a place to calm down.

What is a Calm Room?

While the libraries of antiquity may have been places of silence, modern libraries can be full of activity and noise. In the Children’s Department, at any given time we might have story times, crafts, games, and activities that can create a lot of sound and movement. For some children, an environment like this can become overwhelming.

Our Calm Room is meant for those times when children need a break from that noise and activity. The room has dimmable lighting, soft seating, and toys and other items to encourage relaxation. While the Calm Room does have toys, it isn’t a play room for general use, but rather a space for those children who need a quiet moment to decompress.

Thank you to Hillmann Pediatric Therapy for their generosity and expertise in the creation of this space.

Who can use the Calm Room?

The Calm Room is for children ages 0-10  and their parent or guardian over 18. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian in the room at all times, and up to three people can be in the room at a time.

If you would like to request the Calm Room for your child, you can ask the Youth Reference Desk, and our staff will be happy to open the room for you.

If you have any questions about the Calm Room, please contact us at (815) 756-9568 ext. 3350, or email us at [email protected].
