For this Author Highlight, we will be talking about Vashti Harrison!
Vashti Harrison is an author, illustrator, and filmmaker whose work you can recognize in books like Andrea Beaty’s I Love You Like Yellow, Matthew Cherry’s Hair Love, and many others! Her films and videos focus on her Caribbean heritage and folklore.
She received her BA from the University of Virginia and her MFA in Film and Video from Calarts.
Recently, Vashti Harrison received a Corretta Scott King Illustrator Honor for Lupita Nyong’o’s Sulwe, and she became the first ever African American woman to win the Caldecott Medal for her book titled “Big”.
The Medal is “for distinguished illustrations in a picture book and for excellence of pictorial presentation for children.”
