Ever had an idea to create something and you just didn’t know how to get started? Maybe a sketch on a napkin, a snippet of audio, or a half-formed 3D concept? Turning the spark of an idea into something real you can touch and show others can be quite intimidating if you think you need expensive software or complicated licenses. We offer a different path: open-source tools that are free, flexible, and built by communities of makers who want creativity to be accessible to everyone.

A Free Approach to Creative Software

Open-source software isnโ€™t just about affordability. Itโ€™s about the freedom to explore without worrying about subscriptions or restrictions. Want to edit a photo, record a podcast, create a 3D model, or design a logo? These tools can do it. And theyโ€™re powerful enough that even professionals use many of them every day.

At the library, our Technology & Maker Department gives you hands-on access to these tools. You can try 3D modeling in Blender, sculpt digital art in Krita, edit audio in Audacity, or prepare a 3D print. Staff are available if you get stuck. We won’t do the work for you, but we can guide you through new software, answer questions, and help you figure out the process when you hit a bump.

Your ideas donโ€™t have to stay in your head. With open-source tools at the library, you can experiment, create, and share without limits. Free software, guidance, and a space to explore is all it takes to turn a small spark into something unforgettable.

Communities That Grow

The beauty of open-source is that it grows with you. Communities around programs like Linux, Blender, Audacity, GIMP, Krita, and Inkscape are constantly adding tutorials, plugins, and updates. You can follow along, adopt the tools in your own way, or even modify them if youโ€™re feeling adventurous. Thereโ€™s no one โ€œrightโ€ way to use them. Your imagination is the limit. Your creativity sets the rules.

Open-source tools also travel with you. Start a project at the library, tweak it at home, collaborate with a friend across town. The software works on multiple platforms, and nowadays is often browser-based, so your ideas arenโ€™t trapped on one computer or in one proprietary format. You keep control. You keep ownership. And your work stays yours.
