A Salute to African American Men and Women in the Military

Nov 15, 2024 | News, Adults, Educational Connections, Genealogy and History, Kids, Personal Enrichment, Personal Enrichment, Seniors, Teen

“Often forgotten, often overlooked and often having to fight for the right to fight.”

These words were part of Frederick Douglass’s appeal to Abraham Lincoln to let African American men fight in the Civil War. November is Veteran’s Month, and in honor of this, the library’s main lobby was pleased to host an exhibit honoring our African American patriots from before the Revolutionary War to the present time. Patrons were able to trace the history of African American contributions to the armed forces as they followed each image around the lobby, and learn more by speaking with the exhibit organizers.

This display was offered in partnership with Daniel “Doc” Habeel, Historian and cofounder of An American Patriotism Project of the RTW Veteran Center.
