Who Is Flying Above Us? The Birds of DKPL

Nov 13, 2024 | Adults, Personal Enrichment, Personal Enrichment, Seniors

Bird migration is one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena, and in Northern Illinois, we’re fortunate to have a front-row seat to these seasonal avian journeys. Each spring and fall, hundreds of bird species pass through this region, navigating a network of critical migratory flyways and pausing at rich habitats for rest and sustenance. For birdwatchers and nature lovers alike, this offers prime opportunities to witness rare and beautiful species in transit.

Have you ever wondered how many migratory birds fly over DeKalb each season?  To find out, the ‘Wings Over the Windy City’ project has set up infrared cameras and special sound recorders all over the Chicago area–from the roof of the library to the top of the Willis Tower– to track the millions of birds that migrate through the region each spring and fall.  On Thursday, November 21 at 6:00 p.m. in the Zimmerman Meeting Room, learn about this unique project and what it means for birds and bird-lovers everywhere.

‘Wings Over the Windy City’ is a collaboration among many organizations, including the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the #citybirds collaborative, and Openlands.

To learn more about which birds are flying over the library, visit https://www.migrationbiology.org/chicago#dashboard. Find DeKalb on the map. The dashboard will show you our most frequent visitors and when they tend to visit. Since we started keeping data in late August, the most frequent fly-by has been the Swainson’s thrush, also called olive-backed thrush and russet-backed thrush. It is a member of genus Catharus and is typical of it in terms of its subdued coloration and beautiful, ascending flute-like voice. Swainson’s thrush was named after William Swainson, an English ornithologist.

Bird migration in Northern Illinois is an awe-inspiring spectacle, connecting our region to ecosystems as far north as the Arctic and as far south as Patagonia. Whether you’re a seasoned birder or just a nature enthusiast, each migration season offers an opportunity to connect with the natural world, observe rare species, and support essential conservation efforts. So grab your binoculars and head to one of Illinois’ many birdwatching hotspots to experience one of nature’s most remarkable journeys right in your backyard.
