The Rebecca Caudill Young Readers’ Book Awards is an annual award given to the author of the book voted most outstanding by children in participating Illinois schools from grades four through eight.
To participate, children will read from the annual list of nominees, vote, and then the registered schools and libraries will submit their votes during the month of February.
But who is Rebecca Caudill? Rebecca Caudill was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, but she lived and wrote in Urbana, Illinois for nearly 50 years!
Caudill published her first children’s book, Barrie and Daughter, in 1943 and she eventually published 18 books for children.
This award was created to honor her contributions to children’s literature and is held only in Illinois, as this state was her home for many years.
