National Dog Day

Aug 26, 2025 | Teen, Books with All the Feels

August 26th is National Dog Day! We celebrated International Cat Day a few weeks ago, so it’s time for the doggos to get some love. Whether they give main character energy or are just a main character’s best friend, we have plenty of books for dog people. No judgement as to whether you’re a dog or cat person (or both!), but whether it’s a holiday celebrating your beloved pet or not, we always have books about them.

Your Heart, My Sky: Love in a Time of Hunger by Margarita Engle In early ’90s Cuba, Liana and Amado are hungry and are trying to find food without participating in a forced farm labor program. They meet each other when a stray dog unites them and they begin to plan for a better future.

Surrrender by Sonya Hartnett Gabriel has had a rough life in a small town and his only friends are his dog, Surrender, and Finnigan, a mysterious boy he made a pact with. As his town is overcome by a series of arsons, Gabriel and Surrender realize how dangerous Finnigan is.

Doomsday with My Dog by Yu Ishihara A single teenage girl in Japan seems to be the last human on Earth, but luckily She has her wise-cracking talking Shiba Inu dog, Haru. Having a talking dog by her side makes the apocalypse a bit less scary.

Frogkisser! by Garth Nix Princess Anya has the ability to break curses with a kiss, but she has to live with two evil stepparents who want to make sure she doesn’t inherit the kingdom. Luckily, she has allies including a boy stuck in the body of newt, powerful wizards and a very loyal talking dog.

Charming as a Verb by Ben Philippe First generation Haitian-American Henri “Halti” Haltiwanger is smart, popular and charming, which is how he started his dog-walking hustle to save money towards tuition at his dream college. When his neighbor Corinne discovers dishonest aspects of it, she decides she’ll keep his secret as long as he helps her become more popular at school.
