Here there be dragons…and…Tui birds? Well, not quite.

Tui T. Sutherland, an American children’s author of more than 50 books, is named after the New Zealand Tui bird. Tui T. Sutherland is the author of the nationally and internationally best-selling young adult series, Wings of Fire.

There might not be Tui birds in the books, but there are definitely dragons.

Tui T. Sutherland was born July 31st, 1978, in Caracas, Venezuela. She lived in several different countries before moving to New Jersey in high school. Tui graduated from Williams College with a degree in English literature in 1998.

Tui wasn’t always an author. She actually started her career as a book editor, but “mornings…and office attire are not any of [her] things.”

Tui also had “all these ideas bouncing around [her] head wanting to be written.” So she stretched her wings and her writing career took flight.

Although Wings of Fire is Tui’s most well-known series, it wasn’t her first published work. Tui wrote several Pirates of the Caribbean adaptations, The Menagerie trilogy (with her sister), and the Pet Trouble series. Tui was even part of the group who writes the Warriors and Seekers series!

Wings of Fire is Tui’s current project – and “the most fun,” she says. Wings of Fire tells the story of five young dragons destined to stop the war between dragon tribes. What makes it unique is that it’s told from the dragons’ point-of-view, because Tui wanted the dragons to be the heroes and not “transportation…or sidekicks.” Currently, there are three complete storylines in the Wings of Fire series, with a fourth storyline starting in 2026.
