What’s the Scoop? July is National Ice Cream Month

Jul 14, 2025 | Kids, Family Fun, Reading

I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! That’s right: the essential summer treat has an entire month dedicated to it! July is National Ice Cream Month – and July 20th is National Ice Cream Day.

July has been National Ice Cream Month since 1984, when President Ronald Reagan signed it into law (President Reagan was a huge fan of ice cream himself). The third Sunday in July is National Ice Cream Day.

This yummy frozen treat has a flavorful history. Ice cream was first eaten in China, around 697 AD. Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar ate ice cream, too!

For centuries, ice cream was a treat only for rulers or rich people. It wasn’t until 1660, when Francesco Procopio Dei Coltelli started selling gelato in his café in Italy, that ice cream was available to the public. Ice cream hit the U.S. in 1777, and its popularity soared after the Revolutionary War. These days, ice cream is a common treat – and a great way to cool off in the summer.

So, if you want to beat the heat with books about this sweet treat, come to DeKalb Public Library and indulge your sweet-tooth – without the risk of brain freeze.
