Turn Old Memories Into New Treasures

Dec 8, 2025 | Makers, Computers and Software, Digitizing Old Media

Do you have boxes of old home movies, photo slides, or cassette tapes collecting dust? The library offers an easy way to preserve your cherished memories. With our user-friendly digitization equipment, you can convert your analog media into digital formats that are easy to store, edit, and share.

Whether you’re tackling a big family archive project or just curious about older formats, here’s an overview of the tools available to all patrons.

VHS to DVD and Digital Conversion

VHS tapes degrade over time, and VCRs aren’t exactly easy to find anymore. At the library, you can bring your old VHS tapes and convert them to:

  • DVD for easy playback on most computers and players
  • Digital video files (MP4 or similar), perfect for backing up on a hard drive, uploading to cloud storage, and/or making multiple dvds at a later date

Our digitizing stations include everything you need—no extra equipment required. Just bring your tapes and a storage device for digital copies (USB or external hard drive), and we’ll help you get started. DVDs are available at the Tech Desk for 25¢.

Audio Cassette to MP3 Conversion

Still have mixtapes, interviews, or recordings on cassette? You can digitize them using our cassette-to-MP3 setup.

Once converted, your audio can be edited, enhanced, or shared just like any modern recording.

Slide and Photo Scanning

Old photos fade—but digital files don’t. Our high-resolution scanners help you preserve:

  • Photo prints (all common sizes)
  • 35mm slides
  • Negatives

You can scan individual images or batches, then save, crop, and restore them using our easy editing software. It’s a great option for family history projects and scrapbooking enthusiasts.

8mm Reel Film Scanning

Have vintage 8mm or Super 8 film reels? Our dedicated film scanner lets you convert them frame-by-frame into digital video. This ensures:

  • Better preservation than real-time playback
  • Higher quality digital transfers
  • Safer handling of delicate aging film

Bring your reels, load them into the scanner, and watch your family history come back to life on screen.

Why Digitize at the Library?

  • It’s easy—staff can help you learn each machine
  • It’s empowering—you control the process and your digital files
  • It’s fun—a trip down memory lane as you rediscover forgotten moments
