STEM Kit: Counting Money

Sep 10, 2021 | Educational Connections, Kids, STEAM Adventures

Counting money is a big skill for elementary students, but it can be difficult! If your child could use some extra practice , you want to teach your child, or any other reason, our Counting Money STEM kit is here to help!

This kit contains:

  • Play money: 25 each of all the most common U.S. currencies
    • Pennies
    • Nickels
    • Dimes
    • Quarters
    • Half-dollars
    • Dollar bills
    • Five dollar bills
    • Ten dollar bills
    • Twenty dollar bills
    • Fifty dollar bills
    • Hundred dollar bills
  • Crazy Coin Counting game
  • The Coin Counting Book

The play money is great for learning coin and bill names as well as adding together amounts of money.

In our house, we set up a pretend store and used the play money to buy things. The opportunities are endless here! Make a lemonade store where kids have to use pretend money to buy (real) lemonade. Set up an art gallery where you buy their art. Make a toy store where they have to buy back their toys.

The game Crazy Coin Counting is great at reinforcing coin names, amounts, and adding in a really fun way. My kids had a blast, and they got some sneaky learning in.

Finally, the kit includes one really good book to introduce coin values: The Coin Counting Book. I love the pictures in the book showing real money.

This kit is available in the Youth Services department in the STEM kit area (it’s in the northwest corner of the floor, between the J Fiction and the Story & Activity Room). It checks out for 3 weeks.
