STEM Kit: Beginning to Count

May 12, 2021 | Educational Connections, Kids, STEAM Adventures

This week’s new Children’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) kits is Beginning to Count (Counting 1). This is the perfect kit to have fun learning to count with your little one. This kit is for children ages 3+.

This kit contains:

The Melissa and Doug Stack & Sort board is a great way to practice counting 1-5. It’s also a good color and shape introduction too!

After you’ve mastered 1-5, the Counting Pegs are a really fun, hands-on way to practice assigning numbers to a quantity. It’s very helpful for young children (up until about age 6) to have concrete materials they can touch when they are learning. The Counting Pegs let kids see and touch numbers 1-10. But, be careful: these pegs are small and could be a choking hazard for kids younger than 3.

Then, play a fun game that includes lots of number recognition and counting! Tiny Polka Dots has many game ideas, starting with very simple counting and progressing to simple addition. Numbers are represented many ways, from a numeral, to a ten frame, to different combinations of dots. You can play matching games, adding games, comparing number games, and more. The included game suggestion cards are very helpful.

The two books included are Baby Goes to Market and Stack the Cats. Both of these books feature numbers 1-10 and are fun to read aloud with your little one. There are many, many books on counting at the library, so please ask at the Children’s Department Desk if you would like more!

We will have more advanced counting kits later that will feature counting to 120 and place value.

We hope you enjoy this STEM kit. We have one Beginning to Count kit available for a 3 week checkout. Currently, you can find the kit in the adult department in our Library of Things. Take the DVD case with “STEM Kit: Beginning to Count” to the Circulation Desk, and a library staff member will go and get the kit and check it out for you.
