Starting a podcast nowadays is not as hard as it seems. Expensive microphones, complicated software, and steep learning curves are a thing of the past. All one needs is an idea and the confidence to see it become a reality.
Here at DeKalb Public Library, our Sound Studio isn’t built for experts. It’s built for people who are curious, maybe even a little unsure, and ready to try something new. Whether you’re recording a solo podcast, interviewing an expert, or sharing a conversation with a friend, the goal is the same, to be able to focus on the content of the conversation, not how to record it.
The Rodecaster Duo Audio Interface
The library’s Sound Studio is designed to help achieve this focus and simplify the recording process. At the center of this process is the RØDECaster Duo, our new audio-recording interface. Instead of juggling multiple devices, everything you need is in one place. You don’t need to understand how it works internally to get clean, listenable audio out of it, just a few quick tips to follow and you’re off to the races.

Quick Tips for Using the Sound Studio
Microphone Technique – Speak into the microphone so the “Movo” Logo is facing you. Make a Y with your thumb and finger and use this as an ideal distance for your mouth to be from the mic.
Use Headphones – Wear headphones (available for check out at the Tech Desk) to monitor levels and the overall mix balance while preventing feedback.
Do a Practice Take – Once your levels are set, press record and do a practice take for a minute or so. Play it back and listen on headphones and the monitors and see if you like how it sounds. Make adjustment if needed, record another practice take until you like what you hear, then dive into your full podcast recording.
Ask for Assistance – Staff are nearby if something feels confusing, isn’t working properly, or just seems wrong. Explain the issue to the staff at the Tech Desk and they or another team member will help you find the solution.
Press Record
For many people, recording their first podcast episode at the library is less about launching a show and more about realizing they can. That moment—when the idea becomes a file you can play back—is often enough to keep going. And it only gets easier the more times you do it.
If you’ve been thinking about podcasting but waiting for the right time, this might be it. The equipment is here. The space is ready. All that’s missing is your voice.
Reserve the Sound Studio, bring an idea, and see what happens when you press record.
