We’ve been planning for the Halloween season since the first candy corn appeared on grocery store shelves! (Which was sometime in July, by our recollection.)

Now that the leaves are officially falling, it’s time to head to the library for our amazing lineup of Halloween-themed events! We have programs for all ages this October, and remember, every library event is always free and open to the public. No library card or registration required!

We kick off the weekend with Lizzie Borden and the Borden Murders: The Original CSI on Saturday, October 5, at 1:00 p.m. This presentation from Chicago actor and storyteller, and native of Fall River, Massachusetts, Edward Dzialo, shares the details of the unsolved double murders, and paints a fascinating picture of Lizzie, both before and after the gruesome event, including the use of photos and Lizzie Borden memorabilia.

Thos interested in haunted history should also attend The History of Bram Stoker’s Dracula on Tuesday, October 15, and find out more about The Evolution of Horror Movie Soundtracks on Monday, October 28.

Our Tech Department has creative programs ready for anyone inspired to make their own Halloween decorations! Miniature Painting: Ghosts, Ghouls, and Goblins on Saturday, October 12, Cricut Cutting: Halloween Tote Bags and Perler Bead Halloween Magnets on Thursday, the 17, 3D Printing: ‘Carving’ Pumpkins on October 21, and Halloween Cards with Sizzix Die Cutters on Wednesday, October 23. For anyone who has wanted to learn more about how to use the machines in our 309 Creative Makerspace, October is the perfect opportunity to begin!

Get the kids excited for Family Fun Science: Spooky Anatomy with NIU on Saturday, October 12! Children can learn about anatomy while playing with with slime that models the parts of blood, making a brain hat, and building a pasta model of a human skeleton. On Wednesday, October 16, they can make mummy eye masterpieces at Art Attack. As we approach Halloween, the littles can join our Toddler Halloween Trick-or-Treat Parade after story time on October 29 and 30, and kids of all ages can play a few holes of Halloween Black Light Mini Golf on October 30 and 31, right before trick-or-treating in DeKalb!

Teens, come and make spooky Felt Creatures on October 24 to get into the Halloween spirit!

And finally, all ages are invited on Saturday, October 26, to trick-or-treat your way around the world, sampling 8 different international candies at our International Trick-or-Treat!  While supplies last, try creamy White Rabbit candy from China, salty and spicy mango Pulparindo candy from Mexico, squishy Crrazy Bee Jelly Candy from Ukraine, and more! At 6:30 p.m. on that same day, stay for an After-hours Concert with the Wild Blue Ukulele Orchestra, as they put on their Halloween-themed concert.

Contact us at [email protected] or (815) 756-9568 ext. 1700 with questions about any of these programs. We’ll see you at the library all month long for these and more amazing events!
