Garden Glow-Up

Jul 24, 2025 | News, Adults, Kids, Teen

The next time you stop by the library, save a few minutes to enjoy the Haish Courtyard garden, which is looking happy and refreshed after the hard work of Sweet Life Garden Group!

Sweet Life Garden Group’s volunteers moved through the Haish courtyard like a vertitable whirlwind, conquering weeds, separating and rearranging crowded plants, and giving the space a very-appreciated glow up. Take a look at some of the before and after pictures below!

Sweet Life Garden Group is a volunteer led non-profit that first sprouted in DeKalb in 2023. Their founder, Lori Brown, shared more information about the group’s mission and goals:

How many volunteers support Sweet Life’s efforts?

Our volunteers are a widely diverse interconnected network of more than a dozen individuals, plus kids clubs, high school, college and university student organizations, corporate and church groups and local cooperative and connected nonprofits.

Why is the work so important?

The work of Sweet Life Garden Group is important because we believe community gardens are one of the hallmarks of success in a resilient, flourishing community.

Our food gardens are created to directly serve our food pantry visitors and low-income housing residents with nutrient-dense, easily accessible produce. We are also proud to support our friends at the local senior retirement center and homeless shelter through yard beautification projects.

How can someone volunteer or donate?

Volunteers are welcome to drop-in at any of our scheduled Gardening Days, found on our Facebook or Website Events pages.

We garden nearly all year long, and enjoy hosting individuals and/or special volunteer group events. All ages & stages of gardening experience welcome!

Thank you again to Sweet Life Garden Group for helping to make our library gardens more beautiful!
