Crayons – those colorful commodities found almost everywhere. Stores. Classrooms. Libraries. Homes.

Even though each box of crayons has the same colors, not all colors are used the same. Favorite-colored crayons are worn down to nubs, while other crayons are practically unused.

How do you think the crayons feel about how often they’re used? (Or not used?)

Drew Daywalt answered that question in his bestselling children’s picture book, The Day the Crayons Quit.

Drew Daywalt, born January 5th, 1970, is an award-winning children’s author of over 20 books, the most popular being his Crayons series and spin-offs.

The Day the Crayons Quit has won over 60 national and international awards since its publication on June 27th, 2013.

How did Drew Daywalt turn crayons from staples to stars?

It was simple, really.

He saw a box of crayons on his desk and wondered “what would crayons say if they could talk?”. According to Drew Daywalt, the crayons would be upset and “would chew this kid out because they didn’t like the way they were being used.” Apparently, all the crayons were seeing red, as it were.

The Day the Crayons Quit was met with instantaneous success and praise. It has launched a series of follow-ups and spin-offs. The Day the Crayons Quit is the longest-running title to appear on the number 1 spot of New York Times Bestseller list, staying there for over a year. It also won the Time Magazine Top 100 Best Children’s Books of All Time – no small feat for such ordinary art supplies.

If you want to hear what the crayons have to say for themselves, stop by DeKalb Public Library. Don’t just take our word for it – you’ll want to hear what these colorful characters have to say. And you might not look at your box of crayons the same.
