The DeKalb Public Library has been awarded a 2018 Promise Grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation for the amount of $1,000.00 to provide story time activities and a book to children in the Early Learning and Development Center (ELDC)!
The ELDC, located at Huntley Middle School, 1505 South Fourth Street in DeKalb, is the pre-kindergarten at-risk program for the DeKalb school district which includes Malta and Cortland. There are nine at-risk preschool classes at the school in the morning and nine in the afternoon. Funds from the Promise Grant allow DeKalb Public Library employee Marti Brown to visit each class once a semester to provide a story time. The grant also covers the books needed for two semesters of the 2019-2020 school year.
Brown engages the children in a story time with a theme, much like the story times that she provides during the Little Learners programs at the library. At the ELDC story times, the last book that Brown reads to the children at each session is the book that they each get to take home and keep. The Promise Grant helps to fund the 600 books that are given to the children throughout the year.
Little Learners story times are held at the library every Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. and every Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. They are followed by a craft. These programs are entirely free and open to all, no registration is required.
Promise Grants support charitable community organizations that provide services to underserved and marginalized populations in DeKalb County. Promise Grants are supported by the Promise Fund and the Wiegele Family Early Childhood Literacy Fund. Pictured above is DKPL employee Marti Brown with Jesus Romero and Kate Wiegele. Kate is daughter of Mary Wiegele who helped establish the Promise Grant.
