The Big Read of DeKalb County is back for a ninth consecutive year!  And are back with a bang!  World-Renowned author, Julia Alvarez is coming to DeKalb to speak to DeKalb High School students and end the evening of March 22nd at 6:00 p.m. with a keynote address at the DeKalb Public Library.

More information about the Big Read will be coming soon, we just couldn’t hold onto this secret any longer! Mark you calendars now.

We will be reading her book, “In the Time of the Butterflies” and “Before We were Free”.  Free copies await you if you want to be a part of a book discussion group or if you will be going to any Big Read event beginning February 27th at 11:00 a.m. at the library with a Big Read Kick-off, Dominican-style!  It will be a cultural infusion of the flavors of the beautiful Dominican Republic and starting off the day will be the Dominican Republic Consulate with remarks.  This day, February 27th marks the Dominican’s independence from Haiti in 1844.

Ms. Alvarez’s appearance is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest and by the Friends of the NIU Libraries.

Keep checking back for more fun and flavor!
