Teen Books about Movies

Jun 5, 2025 | Teen, Books with All the Feels, Geek Sauce

Being indoors in air conditioning is a nice relief on a summer day. Besides the library, one of the places that offers the best indoor summer vibe is the movie theater.  At DKPL, we’re bringing a bit of that to you as well. Besides all the DVDs we have available to check out, we also are presenting three sessions of Teen Books to Movies trivia.  While you wait for those programs, why not check out some of our Teen Books where movies play an important role with your free DeKalb Public Library card?

Me and Earl and the dying girl by Jesse Andrews

At his Pittsburgh high school, Greg is mostly a loner. He’s more interested in keeping a low profile and filming bad parodies of his favorite movies with his “co-worker” Earl than making friends.  Things begin to change when his mom encourages him to spark up a friendship with a classmate battling leukemia.

If we were a movie by Zakiya N. Jamal

Rochelle only really cares about becoming valedictorian, getting into her dream college and taking down her arch-nemesis Amira. She figures a job at her local Black-owned movie theater, Horizon, will give her something interesting to put on her college application. Unfortunately, Amira is her boss and strange things are happening at Horizon. While trying to save the theatre, she gets closer to Amira and discovers that she might actually like her.

Monster by Walter Dean Myers

Steve Harmon has dreams of making a movie. But he feels like he’s living one as a 16-year-old on trial for involvement in a murder. As he tries to prove his innocence, he begins to write a journal in the form of a script of his life.

Better Than the Movies by Lynn Painter

Liz is obsessed with romantic comedies and looking for her “happily ever after” or at least a magical moment at prom. She enlists her obnoxious neighbor Wes to try to help her win over one of his friends who happens to be her long-time crush.  As she and Wes scheme, she becomes closer to him and realizes the rom-com of her life may be taking a turn she didn’t expect.

How to Survive Your Murder by Danielle Valentine

Alice wants to be a forensic pathologist and is obsessed with horror movies. When her sister Claire is murdered on Halloween night, her life starts to become too much like one. There’s even a mysterious lookalike of Scream character Sidney Prescott showing up at the trial for the suspect in Claire’s murder. It’s up to Alice to figure out if the right suspect is on trial or the killer could strike again.
