STEM Kit: Adding & Subtracting 1

May 26, 2022 | Educational Connections, Kids, STEAM Adventures

We’ve got several kits on counting, now let’s combine and take away those numbers! If you have a child who is just beginning to add and subtract, we have a kit with hand-on, fun practice. Actually seeing quantities combine and subtract is a great way to begin learning these skills.

Adding & Subtracting 1 kit contents

Here’s what the kit contains:

See & Solve Math game is a great place to start. You can just use the counters with the number tiles on a flat surface, or use the included wooden base to stack them like the picture below.

Bonus: you can also use the included lacing string to practice addition OR patterns! There are four colors of counting pieces and it’s fun to make math patterns with them.

The Math Memory game is matching game, but with addition and subtraction problems. Start with just a few problems (preview the tiles to make sure you have matches!) and work your way up to using the whole set!

We always include good books in our STEM kits, too! Pigeon Math is a hilarious story–the narrator is trying to count the pigeons on the wire but they keep flying away! Quack and Count has 7 ducks in different combinations. They chase bumblebees as 4 + 3, and splash in the water as 2 + 5.

This kit is available in the Youth Services department in the STEM kit area (it’s in the northwest corner of the floor, between the J Fiction and the Story & Activity Room). It checks out for 3 weeks.
