Online Databases

The following databases provide a wealth of information on local, national, and global issues. These resources are available to anyone from within the library. To access them from home, you’ll need your library card number (unless otherwise noted).

American Indian History Online
Funded by the Brian D. Slavenas Center for Cross-Cultural Understanding
The two Facts on File databases, African-American History Online and American Indian History Online, each focus on the history and culture of their respective population group. Information includes articles, videos and photographs, primary source material, biographies and maps. Both databases include curriculum tools for students and teachers. The databases can be searched separately or together as one resource.

African-American History Online

Ancestry Library Edition
Ancestry Library is available only in the library and no library card is needed. Databases are worldwide and cover censuses, vital records, immigration records, family histories, court and legal documents, military records from the colonial to the Vietnam era; directories, photos, maps, and more. Search results can be sent to your home email.

EBSCO
EBSCO allows users to search single or multiple databases for abstracts or full text articles, images and more, from reference works and journals of literary, academic, and business publications.

FirstSearch Databases
FirstSearch is a group of thirteen databases, some of which are available in full-text with images. The most popular of these is WorldCat, used for searching library materials worldwide. Searchable among some of the other databases are scholarly journals and Latin American journals in science and the humanities, government documents, papers and dissertations from worldwide conferences and the educational articles of ERIC.

Gale Virtual Reference Library
Gale Virtual Reference Library is a collection of many reference books brought together in one database. There are reference books in the subjects of biography, business, education, environment, general reference including sports, history, law, literature, medicine, multicultural studies, nation and world, religion, science, and social studies. You can search by subject or you can search the reference book of your choice in its entirety, using the chapter headings or the index.

Health Reference Center
Funded by KishHealth Systems
Health Reference Center is a Facts on File database that allows you to search by subject information on things like body systems, diseases and disorders, drug abuse and addiction, mental health and developmental disorders, nutrition and wellness, or even by medical test. There are specific health centers with health information specific to teen’s, women’s, men’s, children’s and senior’s health.

HeritageQuest Online
Heritage Quest is available only in the library and no library card is needed. Records include: city directories from 1821-1989; U.S. censuses; Freedman Bank records, an important African American genealogy resource; Revolutionary War records; the U.S. Congressional Serial Set with all House and Senate reports and documents published since 1817; and PERSI, a comprehensive index of local history and genealogy periodicals articles. Search results can be sent to your home email.

Lawchek Online
Lawcheck is designed for both the layperson and the attorney, offering simple answers to everyday legal questions. Currently, the site covers eleven areas of the law: Bankruptcy, Contracts, Corporations, Criminal Law, Domestic/Family Law, Education, Intellectual Properties (Patents, Copyrights, Trademarks), Landlord/Tenant, Real Estate, Trial/Litigation, and Wills/Estates.

Learning Express Library
Learning Express Library offers learning centers with educational training for all levels of school, college, career, and life skill improvements. Users may search for guidance, resources, practice tests, and video tutorials in English or Spanish.

Legal Self-Help Center
The Legal Self-Help Center is for Illinois residents who need help in solving their legal problems. The site offers forms, videos, and all sorts of different resources to help residents with their legal questions

Library PressDisplay
Library PressDisplay provides full text, full color access to over 4000 newspapers and magazines from 100 countries in 60 languages. The issues are current and archived for one to two weeks. Included are the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, and USA Today.

Morningstar Investment Research Center
Morningstar Investment Research Center is a comprehensive resource for financial information on stocks, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, and market overviews. Morningstar includes an Investment Classroom offering courses to strengthen your investment skills.

Novelist
Novelist helps you find your next good book to read. It offers recommendations based on your reading choices, book reviews, the ability to browse by genre, and it contains some fun reading lists for all ages.

ReferenceUSA
Reference USA is an online database that provides data for 24 million U.S. businesses searched by company name or custom searched by specific criteria. Reference USA includes additional databases for searching U.S. jobs and internships, U.S. healthcare professionals, and white pages for locating over 89 million U.S. residents.

Value Line Database
Value Line specializes in financial data for over 6,000 stocks, 18,000 mutual funds, 200,000 options and other securities. Search by company name or ticker symbol for an interactive, customized report including a link to the traditional Value Line print edition report as a PDF.
