Virtual Musicking Lecture Presented by NIU Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Born in 1992, Tontrakul Kaewyong is a new generation of Thai artist. His expertise is Isan music culture, such as Mor Lam, Pin, Khaen, Ponglang (Isan is the northeastern part of Thailand, including culture, music, language etc.). Artist, composer, and Creative Director at Synapse Space (a creative online publisher of art and music in Thailand), Tontrakul is also a part-time instructor of music at Mahidol University. Tontrakul has performed with many artists including Rasmee Isan Soul, Ga-Pi, Asia 7, Boyjozz, Jinta, Dj. Machina, and his present works are TONTRAKUL, Asia 7, HED, nisatiwa and Thai x Norsk Project. He has traveled and performed in many countries, including Norway, Japan, United Kingdom, Poland, Germany, Republic of Korea, China, India, Turkey, Philippines, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos.
His virtual event will introduce and explore musical traditions from the Northeast of Thailand, and will explore the background and cultural issues surrounding Isan music—musical instruments, compositions, and ensemble formations—and analyze the music to understand the characteristics of its sound. He will incorporate traditional pieces, as well as original compositions, making it a lecture-recital.
