General Book Club
Mon September 9 @ 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
The General Book Club meets to discuss a work of nonfiction, The Poison Squad by Deborah Blum.
By the late 19th century, food in America was becoming increasingly dangerous. Toxic preservatives and additives were being added to food and drink without government regulations and labeling requirements. Then, in 1883, Dr. Harvey Wiley, a chemistry professor, was named Chief Chemist of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. This is the story of Dr. Wiley’s investigations and struggles for food safety and the volunteer groups of young men, known as the Poison Squad, who served as human subjects for the country’s first food-toxicity trials.
Copies of the book are available in the adult services department.
