The DeKalb Public Library received a $2400 Promise Fund grant from the DeKalb County Community Foundation that will provide story time activities and books to children and families at University Village, Hope Haven, and Conexión Comunidad. The Promise Grant is supported by the Promise Grant Fund and the Wiegele Family Early Childhood Literacy Fund.

The Library currently holds three regularly scheduled story times during the week with two of these held during the day and one in the evening. The popular “Little Learners” program, headed by retired District #428 teacher, Marti Brown, is geared towards children, ages two through five, and caregivers. Music, finger plays, puppets, and books are woven into a weekly theme. Story Time is a facet of early childhood literacy and has been proven to help children improve their motor, developmental, and social skills.

With the help of this grant, the library can now bring this popular story time to Westminster Presbyterian Church and Conexión Comunidad on a bi-weekly basis. Beginning on Tuesday, February 2nd at 11:00 a.m. and then every other Tuesday, Mrs. Brown will begin the Little Learners program at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Residents from Hope Haven and University Village are encouraged to attend these interactive story times. Then starting on February 9th at 11:00 a.m. at Conexión Comunidad, Mrs. Brown will have the story time for the Pleasant Street neighborhood every other Tuesday. Participants at both locations will receive weekly activities and a free book to take home each month.

“We are appreciative of the Community Foundation for their support,” says Marti Brown. “Literacy doesn’t just happen at the library, it starts in the home. What better way to promote this than to go into these neighborhoods to help families engage with books.”

Westminster Presbyterian Church is located at 830 N Annie Glidden Road and Conexión Comunidad is located at 637 N 11st St in DeKalb.
