Independent movies give us new perspectives from writers, directors, and producers who create movies outside of the mainstream. Here are a few you won’t be able to turn off.

In “Ip Man,” an occupying Japanese general challenges Chinese men to duels so he can prove the superiority of the Japanese. Ip Man — a Chinese martial arts master forced to work in the mines — refuses to fight, but can resist for only so long. “Ip Man” is set during the Sino-Japanese War.
This film is not rated, but does feature violence. It stars Donnie Yen and Simon Yam. It is in Cantonese with English subtitles.
