World of Reading: Book Fest

March 24 @ 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM

Celebrate a “World of Reading” on Saturday, March 24! Drop in any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to participate in a wide variety of events focused on books. Costumes are encouraged—dress up like your favorite book character and join the fun!

Main Lobby:

Book Dominoes will start the day! They will be tipped over at 10:15 a.m. Afterwards, a few books will be available in front of the fireplace in the living room area so people can try their hand at it. The other books (mostly science fiction and teen fiction) will be FREE to anyone who would like one, until the World of Reading program ends. Peruse the tables to see if you would like to add any of these FREE books to your personal library! Remaining books will go to the Friends of the Library book sale to raise money for more exciting programming!

Have you read The Toy and the Twister? Or The Toy and the Test Car? The author of the 3 “Stuffed Bunny Science Adventure” books will be in the main lobby between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. with her books. Local author Gillian King-Cargile from NIU STEM Outreach will also have variety of activities, related to her books, so you can make and create and learn!

Take a ‘Book Selfie’ at a table in the lobby any time between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. A variety of books will be available for you to use. Peruse the sample pictures for ideas.

Meet and greet a few characters from literature strolling around the lobby, courtesy of Stagecoach Theatre. Can you name them all?

Great Hall:

Ready Player One, a book being made into a movie, will be celebrated with a special “hunt”. Get the first clue in the Great Hall, then search throughout the library to find the rest. Earn a prize if you complete the quest! You can test your investigative skills from 10:00 – 2:00 p.m.

Relax and be mindful with calm, creative, “literary” coloring. A variety of coloring pages for adults, teens, and children, featuring characters and settings from a variety of great books will be available, along with the coloring tool of your choice – crayons, colored pencils, and/or markers. Stop by the tables in the Great Hall any time between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. to let out your inner artist. Pictures may be taken home, or left at the library to be displayed during the following week. Pictures left at the library become the property of the library.

Looking for the next good read? Brief ‘Teen Book Talks’ will be held in the Great Hall from 11:00 – 11:15 a.m. and again from 1:00 – 1:15 p.m. If you can’t be there, don’t worry! There will be hand-outs listing the recommended reads.

Lower Level:

TAILS will bring a variety of adorable adoptable kittens and puppies to get everyone in the mood for great stories about cats and dogs. In addition to the animals, there will be coloring pictures featuring your favorite critters – Pete the Cat, Hello Kitty, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Scooby-Doo, and more. Visit the animals in the Bilder Family Meeting Room on the lower level any time between 10:00 a.m. and noon.

In the mood for music? Disney tunes will be sung by the Little Treble Makers Show Choir in the Yusunas Meeting Room on the lower level from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m., and again from 11:00 – 11:30 a.m. Stop by to hearing some rousing good tunes. Then head to the children’s department to check out a Disney book.

Book Art may be made in the Zimmerman Meeting Room any time between 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. Drop in and try your hand at a couple different art projects made from out-of-date non-fiction books.

Dance Dimensions will perform selections from the ballet Coppelia, a comic ballet that premiered in 1870.  The story is based upon two books by E.T.A. Hoffman called The Sandman and The Doll. Stop by the Yusunas Meeting Room on the lower level between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. to enjoy the dance selections. About the ballet:  Dr. Coppelius is a doctor who has created a life sized dancing doll.  She is so realistic that the town folk are fooled into thinking she is the doctor’s daughter.  Swanilda, a village girl, is upset that she cannot get Coppelia to come outside and dance with her.  Swanilda and her friends sneak into the doctor’s house where they encounter many dancing dolls. They soon discover that Coppelia is in fact a doll too and not human after all!

My Precious, you must visit the Zimmerman Meeting Room any time between 1:00 – 2:00 p.m. If you are a fan of The Lord of the Rings, try out a Tolkien-inspired activities. Have your picture taken with Gandalf the Grey, attempt to toss the ring into Mount Doom, test your knowledge of Ring trivia, and earn raffle tickets to win the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Upper Level:

Do you adore Dragons Love Tacos, Peter Rabbit, or Pigeon? Activities featuring these beloved children’s book characters can be enjoyed at the tables in front of the windows in the children’s department from 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.

Ooh la la! Dress up in your frilliest and finest for a Fancy Nancy Tea Party in the story-activity room from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.! Create a jeweled tiara, attend a French Academy and expand your vocabulary, and play in Nancy’s Fabulous Fashion Boutique! Please come! Au revoir!

What would a World of Reading be without Story Time? Miss Marti will tell stories (with puppets!) in the story-activity room from 10:00 – 10:20 a.m., and again from 10:30 – 10:50 a.m. The stories and puppets will be different each time, so stay for both!

At 10:50 a.m. children can congregate near the story-activity room for a Costume Parade through the department led by the girl with the purple hair!

We will have a special (purple-haired) guest from the Isle joining us from 10:00 a.m. until noon. She will be available to speak and have pictures taken with children before and after she leads the costume parade. From noon until 2:00 p.m. another special guest will join us. Hermione Granger, straight from Hogwarts, will visit and chat with people until 1:00 p.m. when she will disappear into the story-activity room to greet Harry Potter fans. Many thanks to “Parties with Character” for transporting our special guests to the DeKalb Public Library for our special day.

Muggles are allowed into the magical wizarding world of Harry Potter today! Join us in the story-activity room any time between 1:00 and 2:00 p.m. to make a pair of Harry Potter glasses and test your skills to see if you would be a candidate for Hogwarts. Hermione Granger will be on hand to answer any questions you might have.

Make a paper dragon, paper airplane, paper bird, or anything else that might fly over the balcony and soar into the main lobby. Meet at the table near the DVD machine in the children’s department. We will have 15 minutes to create and fold our ‘flyers’! Our airborne creations will zoom over the balcony and into the lobby at 2:00 p.m. as a grand finale to our World of Reading!
