Great Souls Film Series: Selma

May 3, 2018 @ 7:00 PM - 9:00 PM

The DeKalb Public Library and the Egyptian Theatre present the “Great Souls” film series, a screening of three FREE cultural movies throughout the spring.

The film series will wrap up with a showing of Selma (2014). Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

This movie is rated PG-13 has a running time of two hours.

This program is made possible by the Brian D. Slavenas Center for Cross-Cultural Understanding. The purpose of the Center is to provide educational materials and programming with information and insight on world cultures to the public.

This series is open to all and intended for adults and mature teens. No registration is required. All films will be shown at the Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb.
