8 Countries in 1 Day
Thursday, September 14, 2017
Location:DeKalb Public Library
Travel the world without leaving DeKalb! Patrons are invited to join us for an afternoon of cultural enlightenment and excitement as we portray the customs of eight different countries throughout the library. Guess the spice in Morocco! Learn about Chinese calligraphy from an expert! Make Scandinavian woven heart baskets and yarn dolls in Sweden! Sample bratwurst and sauerkraut in Germany! And much, much more! Other countries featured include Ghana, Indonesia, Chile, and Nigeria.
Each country will have crafts, activities, and food samples available while supplies last. Special performances will be scheduled throughout the evening. Programs and “passports” will be handed out at the welcome table. Visit each country, get your “passport” stamped, and enter for a chance to win a prize! Bring canned goods for additional raffle tickets.
This program is made possible by the Brian D. Slavenas Center for Cross-Cultural Understanding. The purpose of the Center is to provide educational materials and programming with information and insight on world cultures to the public.
The library has partnered with Kishwaukee College, the First Lutheran Church, the NIU Center for Southeast Asian Studies, the NIU Latino Resource Center, and the NIU Center for Black Studies to bring this “8 Countries in 1 Day” program to the community. A special thank you to the DeKalb Confectionary for providing raffle prizes to the event!
This FREE event is open to all, no registration required! It will be hosted again in October featuring eight different countries.
